How to Effectively Create an Outdoor Room

There are many benefits to creating an outdoor room. Not only is this type of space a great way to enjoy the outdoors and entertain guests in an outdoor setting, but it can also increase the resale value of your home. With good planning and by taking all of the necessary steps, you can create the perfect outdoor room for your home.

The first and perhaps most important step to take when creating an outdoor room, is deciding what type of flooring to use. Wood or stone flooring is always best. If you have a basic concrete slab in place it can easily be stamped to create a stone or brick look. Although the easier and less expensive choice, keeping a natural floor of grass or pebbles will require a fair amount of maintenance and will inevitably take away the feeling of having a true outdoor room.

The next step is selecting furniture which will serve as the core of your outdoor room. You should select furniture that coordinates with the look and feel of your home and existing décor, and is versatile enough to allow you to accessorize the space. Wood furniture is often times the most popular selection when choosing outdoor furniture. This is the one area where it’s important not to cut any corners. Well built outdoor furniture will not only last much longer, but will also enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your outdoor room. Teak pieces are always a sure bet when selecting your outdoor furniture. If you don’t want to use wood furniture, whicker is a great alternative. As the final touch, the fabric you use for cushions and seating should match or complement the colors of your home.

The next element you need to address is lighting. Ample lighting will allow you to use your room at night, further enhancing the feeling of having a true room outside. Natural light created by gas lanterns and gas table lamps is ideal because it creates a warm feeling and works very well in an outdoor environment. An outdoor ceiling fan and chandelier combination is also a great way to add light in a very unique and stylish manner.

Finally, adding the right accessories helps to pull together the look you want. Everything from pillows to outdoor rugs and plants will further create the feeling of being in a true room. If space and budget allow, adding an outdoor fireplace provides a great looking centerpiece for your outdoor space, while adding light and warmth to your room. Not only will this allow you to use your outdoor room almost year round, but it will also help in creating natural separation and delineation between what is and is not part of your room.

Although all of the necessary steps can seem daunting at first, not to mention expensive, you do not have to implement all of them at once. But with planning and patience you will create an outdoor retreat that can be enjoyed for years to come.
