There are two types of locksmith licenses:

Automobile Master Key Licenses

These licenses are for individuals working as locksmiths. Persons holding these licenses are entitled to sell or possess equipment that enables them to work on switches or locks of motor vehicles or door locks. These licenses are renewed at the end of a definite term.

Restricted Automobile Master Key Licenses

These licenses are issued to individuals who fall under the automotive and auto body technician trades as well as tow truck drivers. This license restricts locksmith to possess equipment that are designed strictly to operate the switches or locks of automobiles.

Locksmithing: Formal Education & Training

Locksmithing training is imparted by several trade and engineering institutions across the world. Australian engineering colleges even provide a degree in locksmithing. Most schools worldwide offer a certificate for formal locksmithing education. The students are imparted theoratical as well as practical education in these schools. Some of these schools enable the students to get practical education in the locksmithing workshops.

A locksmithing student is made familiar with the makeup of the key and lock. Modern locks have different types of structure which the student has to understand. Locksmiths have to do much more than repairing locks. They must be able to asses where the lock based security system is wanting. A good locksmith must know to implement the appropriate equipment with multiple locks and screen doors. With the technology developing constantly and the new features coming up, a locksmith has to consistently update himself.
