Bodybuilding the Early Years

In ancient times athletes parti[censored] ted in strongman competitions, lifting stones, pulling heavy carts, and lifting heavy animals. The competitions were based on entertaining people with feats of strength not with perfect physiques, most of the competitors possessed lots of strength and body fat. Today's competitions are about muscle m[censored] and definition; the winners possess big muscles and extreme muscle definition.

Eugene Sandow earned the nickname of "The First Famous Bodybuilder" with his extraordinary strength and muscle quality. He toured the United States in the 1890's billing himself as "The World's Strongest Man". He published the first bodybuilding magazine called Physical Culture. He actively promoted the sport of bodybuilding through his touring, shows and development of bodybuilding equipment. Weight Lifting was added to the modern Olympics in 1896 for the first time. The bodybuilding industry was created through the sales of barbells and dumbbells, promoted through the efforts of Eugene Sandow and the weightlifting at the Olympics. Eugene Sandow organized the first bodybuilding contest on September 14, 1901 and called it the "Great Competition". Sandow is immortalized on the current Mr. Olympia Statuette.
